GENERAL SESSION 1
Our Multi-Generational Communications Challenge: Selling a Left Brain Product to a Right Brain Buyer
In the final year of the millennium's first decade, we are all challenged by the need to get things realigned and restore order out of chaos. It is no less inconvenient that these same critical times coincide with America's largest generation preparing for retirement and dreaming of healthy and vibrant golden years. Will the greatest extension of human life brought about in the 20th century be a blessing or a curse for the new century? And perhaps more importantly for our purposes; what role can employee benefits play in this brave new world.

According to Met Life's national study, poor communication is one of the key factors leading to the under-appreciation of employee benefits. What is not told in the study is how good communication goes bad. In this session Mr. Goldstein will help employee benefits professionals understand one of the key secrets of his trade....you cannot communicate left brain information to a right brain thinker. It is not so much the sending of information but the receiving of information that needs improvement. By orchestrating your benefits communication to match the "impaired" style of the recipient you will enhance its effectiveness and improve your company's bottom line.

Incenting Employees to Improve Health and Productivity Behaviors
The Integrated Benefit Institute's research with chief financial officers across the country demonstrates that employers now recognize that the impact of workforce health extends far beyond healthcare costs, and includes absence, disability and lost productivity. This fundamental fact leads employers to understand that improving employee health behaviors is far more important than ever before. Dr. Thomas Parry, IBI's president, will discuss the Institute's latest research on how 500 employers are incenting improved health behaviors and discuss how to bring lost productivity measures into that framework.

The Evolution of Workplace Benefits: Providing for Employees' Total Financial Health
With baby boomers beginning to reach retirement age in unprecedented numbers, the composition of the American workforce will undergo a fundamental change. As members of "Gen Y" enter the workforce, they bring a new set of needs as employees and wants as consumers. It is undeniable that workplace savings plans, in particular total compensation and benefit allocation, must continue to evolve. It is incumbent upon service providers and employers to find innovative ways to distinguish their organizations through flexible benefits that better meet the needs of a more fluid workforce. The speaker will demonstrate how, in doing so, these employers will be better prepared to manage evolving fiduciary and regulatory risks.

BREAKOUT SESSION 2: Retirement Track
Phased Retirement .... Now Fazed Retirement? How Have Participants Reacted to the Economic Downturn and What Are the Implications for Your Workforce Planning?
Many industries have been concerned about the "brain drain" of critical positions and finding the right talent as the Baby Boomers enter their retirement years. After the market downturns at the beginning of the millennium, many potential retirees put off their departure dates, and once again, after the market crashes of 2008, the issue of employees not being financially prepared to leave the workforce may slow the pace of retirements. Is the workforce shortage problem solved, or do we now have other problems to deal with?

The experience of employers has not been uniform, and some face the strange situation of dealing with shortages and surpluses in their labor force simultaneously. In this session we will be discussing what has been happening since late 2008 and to learn some workable strategies for dealing with the effects.

This presentation will share:

  • Research of the effect of the economy on retirement behaviors
  • Analytical frameworks and tools to ensure you are proactive and strategic in addressing surpluses and shortage
  • Methodologies for development a holistic, data-driven phased retirement strategy
  • Approaches companies are taking to more directly influence the timing of retirements, especially among its critical personnel
  • Some things to do now

Exit Strategies for Your Frozen DB Plan

When a pension plan sponsor decides to close a pension plan down, there are many issues and options to be considered. Finding the right path to the ultimate goal demands a series of complex decisions and considerations about financial and employee-perception priorities. This workshop addresses the increasing demand for DB exit strategies and the creative new approaches and products that are being developed to meet senior financial and HR managers' needs.

At this workshop, a panel of experts will provide insight into each step of the process and discuss questions including:

  • Should the plan's asset allocation strategy be modified?
  • Should investments designed to match liabilities be utilized?
  • How should the plan's termination readiness be monitored?
  • Are there opportunities to transfer the pension risk prior to plan termination?
  • How should employees be prepared for the critical decisions they will have to make when it's time to distribute assets in order to keep them on the track to a secure retirement?
  • What are the advantages of each of the many distribution options: IRA rollovers, conditional rollovers to a 401(k), annuities, guaranteed income products with downside protection, new DB-like features in the 401(k) plan?
